Yoga

What is yoga?

In the ancient language of Sanskrit from which the word yoga was born, yoga means union and it is built on the fundamental foundation of connection among all things. Created well over 5000 years ago, yoga was born out of a desire for greater personal freedom, health, long life and heightened self-understanding.

Today yoga offers these same benefits. Experienced as a moving meditation using asanas (yoga poses) and breath intricately linked together yoga opens us, strengthens us and calms us. Through a regular yoga practice we typically experience:

  • Stress relief, which also lowers cortisol in the body (known to cause excess belly fat)
  • Increased strength and flexibility
  • More muscle tone
  • Increased energy levels
  • Increased clarity
  • Weight management
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved sleep
  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Increased sense of peace

How do I know which class is right for me?

For those who are just beginning to practice yoga, we recommend our Building Blocks of Yoga where you will learn basic poses and become familiar with your breath again—all in a supportive and friendly environment. Here you will gain more confidence in the poses, learn how to deepen your breath and your focus and you will begin to mindfully build strength and flexibility. Taking the time to learn the fundamentals of your lifelong yoga program will greatly enhance your overall experience.

What should I bring to class?

Yourself, dressed in comfortable clothing that you can easily move in, and a mat if you have one.

What should I wear?

Athletic clothing that you can easily move in that is also flexible and non-binding. Yoga pants and a closer fitting shirt usually works great. No socks please. We practice barefoot for traction.

Should I drink water before class?

In most yoga traditions it is not recommended to drink water during class. Best to drink a little before and after, but of course listen to your body and drink water if needed during your practice.
